NFL Reverses Fine on Kyle Juszczyk, Citing 'Juice Box' Celebration Clarification
League backtracks on penalty for 49ers fullback's touchdown celebration after backlash and player's clarification.
The National Football League has rescinded a $14,926 fine levied against San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk for his Week 2 touchdown celebration, reversing its initial judgment after significant fan backlash and a clarification from the player.
The fine was issued after Juszczyk, whose nickname is 'Juice,' mimicked drinking a beverage after scoring in a game against the Miami Dolphins on September 20. The league initially deemed the celebration an 'offensive demonstration' and an imitation of 'chugging a beer.'
However, the NFL announced on Wednesday that the fine would be withdrawn. According to the league, Juszczyk clarified that his celebration was intended to simulate drinking a juice box, not a beer. The league also acknowledged Juszczyk's statement that the fine was hypocritical given the extensive Bud Light sponsorships surrounding the NFL.
In response to the incident, the league issued new guidance stating that future celebrations imitating drinking a beverage will not be subject to discipline. The NFL emphasized that when conduct falls into a gray area, players will be contacted and provided direction before any discipline is imposed, with a warning that repeated use of a borderline celebration may lead to future fines.
The league reiterated that individual and team celebrations are an integral part of the game and help players connect with fans. The updated guidance aims to provide players with clearer parameters for self-expression while upholding sportsmanship principles.
The NFL did, however, maintain that celebrations depicting violence, weapons, gang-related signs, smoking, drug use, or those of a sexual nature would still result in discipline.
Juszczyk, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection who joined the 49ers in 2017, had appealed the fine, stating, 'I don't even drink beer.' Fans and former players, including JJ Watt, had publicly questioned the league's decision, highlighting the player's nickname and the league's own alcohol sponsorships.
Fans also pointed out that Juszczyk had used the celebration throughout his career without prior issue. The league's reversal addresses the perceived inconsistency and hypocrisy that arose from fining a player for a celebration that mimicked drinking while simultaneously partnering with major alcohol brands.
