NFL Rescinds Fine for Lions Receiver's Marijuana Celebration

The National Football League has rescinded a fine issued to Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams for a touchdown celebration that appeared to mimic smoking marijuana. Williams had argued that the substance is legal in Michigan, where the team plays its home games.

Recreational marijuana is legal in Michigan and 23 other U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C. The celebration occurred during a game against the Buffalo Bills, a team also playing in a state where recreational marijuana is legal.

Williams, along with teammates Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs, each received fines of $14,926 and $11,941 respectively for the gesture. However, appeals officer Derrick Brooks ultimately overturned Williams' fine. In his written decision, Brooks stated, "Although I rescinded this fine, please make every effort to celebrate with your teammates in the best professional manner possible."

Appeals from Williams' teammates are still pending. This decision follows a trend of the NFL rescinding certain fines for player celebrations. Notably, fullback Kyle Juszczyk recently had a fine for a drinking celebration overturned after he clarified he was consuming juice, not alcohol, and highlighted the league's own sponsorship deals with alcohol brands.

Historically, the NFL had stricter policies regarding marijuana, including suspensions for repeat positive tests. However, the league removed these penalties in 2020.

Williams has been fined a total of nine times for various gestures and taunts, accumulating $140,686 in penalties throughout his career. He has also faced suspensions in the past, including one for performance-enhancing substances and another for gambling violations.
