NFL insider Dianna Russini is reportedly preparing to speak out about the scandal involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Russini resigned from The Athletic in April following an investigation into her relationship with Vrabel.
According to Page Six, Russini is considering offers to return to covering the NFL and aims to share her perspective on the controversy. The move comes five months after photos emerged showing Russini and Vrabel, both married, at an adults-only resort in Arizona. The pair denied an affair at the time.
The scandal intensified with the appearance of further photos, allegedly depicting Russini and Vrabel kissing in a New York City bar in 2020. These revelations prompted an internal investigation by The Athletic.
Investigation Findings
The Athletic's investigation concluded that Russini was "noncompliant" with the outlet's standards regarding her reporting on Vrabel. The report stated that her relationship with Vrabel was a "clear violation" and should have been disclosed, regardless of whether it was romantic. However, the investigation found limited evidence of bias in her reporting.
Mike Semel, The Athletic's editorial director for standards and quality, noted that while he found no "clear link to conclude that Russini used her platform to help promote Vrabel or help his teams," there were instances where she wrote "glowingly of Vrabel that in hindsight are awkward or even uncomfortable."
Following the investigation's findings, Russini issued a statement affirming, "I stand by any and all reporting I’ve ever done in my career."
Fallout and league concerns
Russini previously covered the Tennessee Titans for ESPN when Vrabel was their head coach, before joining The Athletic while Vrabel moved to the Patriots. Vrabel apologized for the situation before the NFL Draft, missing its final day for counseling.
A recent ESPN report indicated that coaches across the league are now reportedly under increased scrutiny, with concerns about potential similar situations arising. Assistant coaches expressed that the controversy has led to a perception that requires greater caution regarding personal relationships.
The NFL season is set to begin, with Vrabel's Patriots scheduled to face the Seattle Seahawks. Russini, who reportedly turned down numerous interview requests to speak on her own terms, is expected to address the scandal as she contemplates her next career steps.
