NFL Quarterback's Wife Kelly Stafford Criticizes Sydney Sweeney's Controversial Betting Ad
Kelly Stafford, wife of LA Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, has publicly voiced her disapproval of actress Sydney Sweeney's recent nude advertisement for a sports betting company, aligning with a growing chorus of criticism.
The controversial advertisement, featuring Sweeney provocatively posed with sports equipment for the betting company Novig, has ignited a significant debate online. Sweeney herself has reportedly lost over 200,000 Instagram followers following the ad's release, with several female athletes also condemning the campaign for its portrayal of women in sports.
Kelly Stafford, a prominent figure among NFL wives and a mother of four, shared her perspective on social media. She reposted a video by influencer Daniel Hong, accompanying it with emphatic agreement. The video emphasized the distinction between attention and intrinsic value, a message Stafford clearly supports. "Appearance can get you attention: likes, comments, followers, money, opportunities. All of that is very real. What I want them to understand is that attention and value are not the same thing," Hong stated in the clip.
Stafford, who frequently discusses parenting on her podcast "The Morning After," has been vocal about societal issues. Her comments add to the mounting criticism directed at Novig and its CEO, Jacob Fortinsky.
Fortinsky defended the campaign, stating that Novig "never intended to portray female sports." He clarified that Sweeney is an actress and the ad aimed to promote their sports prediction market. However, the advertisement has faced backlash from sports figures like British sprinter Amy Hunt. Hunt argued that role models in sports should emphasize a woman's physical capabilities rather than her appearance. She highlighted concerns that such ads could deter young girls from participating in sports, citing statistics on declining female participation before age 16.
Hunt expressed that the focus should be on empowering young people to engage in physical activity without worrying about their looks or attire. Despite the controversy, the advertisement has reportedly appeared on billboards in New York's Times Square.
