NFL Proceeds With Paris Game Amid French Unrest

The National Football League (NFL) has announced it will proceed with its first-ever regular season game in Paris as planned, despite concerns over ongoing social unrest in the French capital. The league stated that preparations for the event, scheduled for October 25 at the Stade de France, are continuing on schedule.

France has experienced several weeks of protests and clashes between demonstrators and riot police, leading to thousands of arrests and hundreds of injuries. These scenes have raised questions about the safety and advisability of hosting an international sporting event during this period.

However, the NFL issued a statement to ESPN affirming its commitment to the game. "We're excited for the first-ever regular season game in Paris, and preparations continue as scheduled for NFL events and the game at Stade de France on October 25," the statement read. "As we do for every NFL game, including our international games, we work closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters. We look forward to welcoming fans to Paris later this month."

The protests, which began with student demonstrations, have evolved into broader unrest impacting France's political landscape and drawing international attention. While many demonstrations have been peaceful, instances of violence have been noted.

The NFL has previously relocated an international game due to logistical issues. In 2018, a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams in Mexico City was moved to Los Angeles because the field was deemed unsuitable for play.

When the Paris game was announced, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell highlighted it as a significant step in the league's international expansion. "Bringing a regular season game to Paris in 2026 marks an exciting next step in the continued expansion of the league's global footprint," Goodell said. "Paris is one of the world's greatest sporting and cultural cities with tremendous success in hosting global events that unite fans on the biggest stages."

Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, expressed enthusiasm for her team's participation. "We are excited to be selected to play in the first regular season game to be held in France," Benson stated. "This moment is special not only because of the strong cultural connection between Louisiana and France, but also because we will compete before a growing Saints fan base in Paris."

The matchup will see the New Orleans Saints host the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Stade de France on October 25. This event is part of the NFL's ongoing strategy to grow its global presence and engage with international fan bases.
