NFL Primetime Schedule Fuels Conspiracy Theory of Mid-Week Game Testing

The NFL's scheduling strategy, which has seen teams like the Atlanta Falcons appear in three consecutive primetime games this season, has fueled a conspiracy theory suggesting the league might be testing the waters for future Tuesday and Wednesday night broadcasts. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio proposed this hypothesis, noting that such a scheduling experiment could be a precursor to embracing mid-week games.

Florio suggested that if the NFL were to adopt Tuesday and Wednesday night games, the only way to make the schedule function would be to have teams play on consecutive Thursdays, Wednesdays, and Tuesdays. This year's schedule has featured teams in multiple primetime slots, including the Rams (Weeks 1-3), Falcons (3-5), Cowboys (5-7), Seahawks (6-8), and Bears (7-9).

The NFL has been increasingly assertive in claiming holiday programming, notably taking over Christmas Day from the NBA and adding a Black Friday game in 2023 to its established Thanksgiving Day presence. This expansion into new programming days aligns with the idea of exploring new broadcast windows.

However, an unnamed NFL spokesperson told Forbes that the clustering of primetime games for certain teams was unintentional. "This happens a few times a year and was not intentional, but rather a function of how the overall 272-game schedule works out," the spokesperson stated, attributing it to a combination of factors including opponents, stadium availability, viewership predictions, and network requests. Forbes reported that this scheduling quirk did not occur in 2025, though the Packers did have four consecutive primetime games in 2024.

Historically, the NFL has only moved a game to Wednesday once before, in 2012, to avoid a conflict with President Barack Obama's Democratic National Convention speech, when the Giants-Cowboys game was rescheduled. The league's recent decision to open the season on a Wednesday for the first time independently, rather than due to external factors, adds another layer to the discussion around potential scheduling innovations.
