NFL Player Jahmyr Gibbs' Fictitious Alma Mater on Sunday Night Football Amuses Fans
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs listed 'Hollywood Arts' as his alma mater during player introductions, referencing a popular Nickelodeon show and its upcoming Netflix spinoff.
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs playfully misled NFL fans and NBC viewers on Sunday Night Football by listing a fictitious school as his alma mater during the game's opening introductions. Instead of mentioning his actual college, the University of Alabama, Gibbs deadpanned "Hollywood Arts" as his educational background.
Hollywood Arts is the name of the performing arts high school featured in the Nickelodeon teen sitcom "Victorious" and its forthcoming Netflix spinoff. The moment quickly garnered attention on social media, with fans appreciating the pop culture reference.
This playful deviation from the typical introductions is not unprecedented in the NFL. Other players have used similar tactics to inject humor or pay homage to their interests. For example, former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen often stated he was "homeschooled" and thanked his mother. Safety Jamal Adams referenced the anime cartoon "Naruto," while former Seattle Seahawks star Russell Okung claimed "Wakanda Tech" as his alma mater, a nod to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite Gibbs's lighthearted moment, the Detroit Lions ultimately lost their Sunday night matchup against the Carolina Panthers with a score of 32-26. The team's defense allowed 445 yards, and the Panthers held a significant advantage in time of possession. Although quarterback Jared Goff threw for 412 yards, Gibbs's own performance was uncharacteristically subdued, with 46 rushing yards on 15 carries. He did manage to score his seventh touchdown of the season and added 31 receiving yards on four catches.
The Lions are scheduled to play the Arizona Cardinals next on Sunday.
