New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has been accused of orchestrating the decision to remove rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran's nationwide tour, after the artist delivered a "Free Palestine" speech on stage. The controversy led several major U.S. venues to notify tour promoters that Macklemore would not be permitted to perform.
The potential for widespread venue cancellations threatened the entire tour, prompting the decision for Macklemore's removal. Following this development, Macklemore addressed the situation on Instagram, stating that Kraft, described as an observant Orthodox Jew, presented an ultimatum to other stadium owners.
Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, recounted conversations with Ed Sheeran, explaining that Sheeran had informed him of Kraft's intervention. According to Macklemore, Kraft stated that the rapper would not be allowed to perform at Gillette Stadium, which is owned by the Kraft Group. Sheeran also reportedly told Macklemore that Kraft had subsequently rallied other stadium owners, collectively issuing an ultimatum: if Macklemore remained on the tour, Sheeran would be barred from performing in their venues.
Macklemore expressed hope that the incident would not permanently damage his 13-year friendship with Sheeran, emphasizing that their personal relationship should not preclude his responsibility to speak out about events in Gaza. He stated his willingness to continue dialogue with Sheeran, encouraging mutual study and reflection on the situation in Palestine and the complexities of neutrality during such times.
