The National Football League has rescinded a $14,926 fine levied against San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who successfully appealed the penalty by asserting his touchdown celebration was a reference to his nickname, "Juice," rather than an imitation of drinking beer. The league had initially deemed the celebration an "offensive demonstration" that could be "construed as being in poor taste."
During the appeal hearing, Juszczyk presented his case, explaining that his nickname is widely known among fans and inscribed on his equipment. He argued that his gesture was meant to represent drinking a juice box, a claim the NFL's hearing officer ultimately found justifiable. The appeal also reportedly touched on the league's own sponsorship agreements with beer brands, including Bud Light.
Juszczyk had expressed surprise at the initial fine, noting that he had used the same celebration numerous times before without issue. He also stated that he rarely drinks beer, typically only a few times a year and often during the offseason with teammates.
The fine reversal comes as Juszczyk faces a separate setback due to a knee injury sustained in a recent game. An MRI revealed a hyperextended knee and a bone bruise, which is expected to sideline him for "a few weeks," according to coach Kyle Shanahan.
