NFL Monitoring French Unrest Ahead of Paris Game; Venue Change Possible

The National Football League is closely monitoring escalating street violence in France as it prepares for its first-ever regular season game in the country between the New Orleans Saints and the Pittsburgh Steelers, scheduled for next Sunday at the Stade de France near Paris.

A league source indicated that while there are currently no plans to relocate the game, a change in venue could be considered if circumstances warrant.

France has experienced widespread unrest, with reports of protests escalating into clashes with police, looting, and vandalism. In Limoges, the historic city hall was set ablaze. By Sunday, arrests across the country had climbed to between 1,000 and 1,800, with 855 occurring in the Paris region.

Former NYPD inspector Paul Mauro described the situation as challenging for French law enforcement, as masked groups clashed with authorities. The violence has drawn international attention, including from former President Donald Trump, who commented on the situation via Truth Social.

The NFL has previously expressed enthusiasm for the inaugural game in France. In a statement, the league said, "We look forward to welcoming fans to Paris later this month." Saints owner Gayle Benson highlighted the historical ties between Louisiana and France, stating the game would strengthen cultural and economic connections.

However, the worsening security situation has prompted the league to reassess. The anonymous league source told OutKick that the NFL is working with local authorities on all operational and security matters. "If events warrant, a change in venue can be considered," the source stated.

The Saints are scheduled to travel to Paris after their game against the New York Giants, with plans to spend the week in France to acclimate. The potential for a venue change could present logistical challenges, as the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans is booked for an event on October 25, the day after the scheduled Paris game. The Steelers' home stadium, Acrisure Stadium, does not have an event scheduled for that date.
