Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has been fined $11,492 by the NFL for displaying the name 'Hind Rajab' on his eye black during a recent game against the Buffalo Bills. This marks the latest instance of Al-Shaair being penalized for conveying political messages on his uniform, a practice prohibited by league rules.
Hind Rajab was a five-year-old Palestinian girl who died in Gaza in January 2024 after Israeli forces fired on her family's car. Her death prompted international outcry and led to an investigation by the Israeli military into troop conduct.
Al-Shaair has previously been fined for similar actions. In January, he received an $11,593 fine for wearing a 'stop the genocide' message on his eye black during a playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The NFL's rulebook strictly forbids players from conveying personal or political messages on their uniforms without prior league approval, and the league states it will not permit messages related to political activities or causes.
Speaking in January about the possibility of being fined, Al-Shaair stated, "I knew that that was a fine. I understood what I was doing." He added, "At the end of the day, it’s bigger than me. The things that are going through makes people uncomfortable, imagine how (Palestinians) feel? That’s the biggest thing."
Al-Shaair has consistently used his platform to advocate for Palestine. He has previously worn custom cleats supporting Palestinians, including messages like 'Free Palestine' and displaying the reported number of Palestinian lives lost in the conflict. He has expressed a desire to bring attention to the issue, stating, "I feel like it's something that's trying to be almost silenced."
Beyond his uniform statements, Al-Shaair signed a three-year, $54 million contract extension with the Houston Texans in April after leading the team with 103 tackles and two interceptions. He was also nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his community work, particularly with underprivileged youth.
Al-Shaair has also drawn attention for his on-field conduct. In December 2024, he received a three-game suspension for a hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion. Following the incident, Al-Shaair made controversial social media posts, later apologizing, where he accused critics of the hit of being 'racist and Islamophobic.'
