NFL Fines Texans Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair Again for Unapproved Message

The NFL has fined Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for a second time for displaying an unapproved personal message on his eye black. The latest penalty, amounting to $11,492, was issued after Al-Shaair wrote "Hind Rajab" beneath his eyes during the Texans' season-opening game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian girl, was killed in January 2024 with six family members in Gaza City after their vehicle was targeted. Her death became a prominent symbol of Palestinian suffering, and the Israeli military began a criminal investigation into the incident in August.

Al-Shaair continued to wear the eye black during postgame interviews, drawing the attention of the league. The NFL cited Rule 6, Section 4, Article 8, which prohibits players from displaying personal messages on game days without prior league approval, a rule that extends from pregame warmups through postgame interviews.

This marks the second instance in eight months that Al-Shaair has been fined for such a message. In January, he received an $11,593 fine for wearing eye black that read "Stop the Genocide." He had also worn the same message during warmups the following week but removed it after being warned he could be pulled from the game.

Following the initial penalty, Al-Shaair stated that his concern for those suffering overseas was "bigger than me" and that he aimed to use his platform to draw attention to their plight.

The NFL's policy on personal messages has previously led to penalties for other players. Notably, San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa was fined for displaying a "Make America Great Again" hat during a postgame interview. The league's rule is based on authorization rather than the specific content of the message.

The latest fine is unlikely to pose a significant financial burden for Al-Shaair, who signed a three-year, $54 million contract extension that included a $14 million signing bonus. Reports indicate that Al-Shaair does not plan to appeal the fine. His willingness to accept the consequences for his message, even after a previous penalty, underscores his commitment to raising awareness.
