NFL Fans Criticize National Anthem Performance Before Eagles-Cowboys Game
Social media reactions were largely negative following a jazz-influenced rendition of the anthem by saxophonist Hiruy Tirfe.
Fans expressed strong dissatisfaction with the performance of the U.S. national anthem prior to the Week 7 Monday Night Football matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. Saxophonist Hiruy Tirfe delivered a jazz-influenced rendition of the song at Lincoln Financial Field, which concluded with applause and whistles from the in-person crowd.
However, the reaction on social media platforms was significantly different, with numerous users criticizing Tirfe's performance. Many took to X, formerly Twitter, to voice their opinions, with one user stating, "Leave it to the Philadelphia eagles to have an absolutely garbage rendition of the national anthem." Another comment described it as, "Worst National Anthem Ever! Really Blows! #DALvsPHI."
Questions were raised about the preview process for televised performances, with one user asking, "What a horrible saxophone National Anthem tonight. Do you guys ever preview what you're presenting on television." Another expressed a preference for vocal performances, noting, "With all due respect, a saxophone might be the worst way to perform the national anthem." A similar sentiment was shared regarding a previous performance in Paris, with a user commenting, "I always prefer someone to sing it [shrug emoji] They did the same thing for #NFLParis."
This marks the second consecutive week of divisive national anthem performances during Monday Night Football broadcasts. The previous week, pop singer Pat Monahan performed the anthem with his son, Rock, a rendition that also drew criticism online. Comments at that time included, "Easily the worst rendition of the national anthem by a professional singer I can remember," and "Might be worst national anthem I've seen #MNF."
