NFL Fan Event in Paris Canceled Amid Security Concerns From Protests
The Pittsburgh Steelers' fan event in the Bastille neighborhood was called off due to recent civil unrest, though the NFL game itself is still scheduled to proceed.
A fan event for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris has been canceled due to security concerns following recent street protests in the French capital. The NFL and the team announced the cancellation of the event, which was scheduled to take place at a bar in the Bastille neighborhood, on Thursday. This decision follows NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's earlier statement expressing confidence in the league's ability to host games in Paris despite recent civil unrest.
The NFL stated that preparations for the game between the Steelers and the New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France are continuing as planned, with the league working closely with local authorities on security matters. The cancellation of the fan event was described as a precautionary measure, particularly given that the Bastille area has experienced recent disruptions.
Demonstrations in France initially erupted last month in response to issues at a high school in Creteil, southeast of Paris, related to staffing shortages. These protests expanded to include class strikes and blockades, spreading to other Paris suburbs and nationwide. High school students voiced concerns about underfunded schools, poor facilities, and a lack of staff, especially in lower-income areas. Some also called for reforms to the university admissions system, which they perceived as complicated and unfair.
As the government's response to student demands was seen as insufficient, the school demonstrations evolved into broader protests against the rising cost of living, occurring just months before the presidential election to select Emmanuel Macron's successor. Around 2,400 people have been arrested, and thousands of businesses have been damaged or looted as a result of the unrest.
Despite these challenges, NFL vice president for global events, Nicki Ewell, confirmed that no other NFL fan events have been affected. The league has emphasized its collaboration with local authorities to ensure the safety and operational integrity of the game. Commissioner Goodell noted that protests are not uncommon in France and that the league is prepared to address any such situations.
