NFL Faces Scrutiny Over Bizarre Play Amidst Sports Betting Concerns

A peculiar play during the recent Chicago Bears versus New England Patriots game has prompted host Craig Carton to call for an NFL investigation, citing concerns about sports betting integrity. The incident occurred late in the first half when Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson caught a screen pass and scored a touchdown as time expired.

On "The Craig Carton Show," Carton highlighted the actions of Bears defensive back Malik Muhammad during the play. Video footage appears to show Muhammad running in the opposite direction of Stevenson, seemingly avoiding engagement with the ball carrier. This unusual movement has led to questions about the play's legitimacy.

"What Malik Muhammad does next is why every single person that is against legalized wagering thinks the fix is in," Carton stated. "Rather than step into the hole and make an attempt to tackle Stevenson, he literally runs away from the play."

Carton emphasized that the play, regardless of whether it was a misread or something more, represents a significant missed tackle. He suggested that the NFL should investigate the matter, particularly interviewing Muhammad and Bears coach Ben Johnson to understand the player's actions.

"The NFL now has to sit down and interview Malik Muhammad and interview Ben Johnson of the Bears and get an explanation as to why (Muhammad was) running away from the ball carrier?" Carton questioned. "There's not even a logical, reasonable explanation... No, there was no chance to cut outside because by you coming this way, you opened up a seven-yard gap."

While the play did not impact the game's outcome, as the Bears ultimately won and covered the spread, Carton believes the circumstances warrant scrutiny, especially given the increasing prominence of sports betting in professional sports. He pointed to recent events, such as the NBA and sportsbooks agreeing to ban certain bet types due to scandals, as evidence of growing concerns.

"And that's the type of play that needs to be investigated," Carton concluded.
