NFL Executive Questions Hype Surrounding Quarterback Arch Manning
An anonymous AFC assistant general manager expressed skepticism about the widely held expectations for the Texas quarterback.
An assistant general manager in the NFL has voiced doubts about the considerable hype surrounding Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who was recently ranked fifth in ESPN's updated quarterback projections for the 2027 NFL Draft. The executive questioned the basis for the widespread "blind faith" in Manning's potential, suggesting that his current performance might accurately reflect his capabilities as a prospect.
Manning, nephew of former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, is currently in his redshirt junior season at Texas. The Longhorns, ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 at 4-0, are preparing to face Florida. Manning has completed 73 of 115 passes for 862 yards, with seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He was instrumental in Texas' victory over Ohio State earlier in the season.
Despite a strong family legacy in the sport, Manning's draft outlook has been described as murky by some due to inconsistencies. ESPN's rankings placed other quarterbacks, including Drew Mestemaker of Oklahoma State, Darian Mensah of Miami, Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, and CJ Carr of Notre Dame, ahead of Manning. Criticisms cited include his high time-to-throw average and a notable percentage of off-target passes.
One anonymous scout told ESPN that while Manning might not be the best prospect in his class, his "flashes in games are fascinating and a preview of what could happen down the road." The scout also acknowledged that Manning's famous surname inherently places him under a different evaluation scale.
Manning's next opportunity to showcase his abilities will be Saturday's game against Florida. Earlier in the season, Manning issued an apology to ESPN reporter Holly Rowe after bringing up an AI-generated video depicting Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian in a compromising situation involving Rowe. His uncle, Eli Manning, has expressed a personal wish for Arch to be drafted by the New York Jets, allowing family to attend his games.
