NFL Coach Responds to Player's Martin Luther King Comparison

Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson sparked a social media stir by comparing head coach Kevin Stefanski to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. following an inspirational team speech.

The comparison came after the Falcons secured their first win of the NFL season, a 35-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football, bringing their record to 1-2.

Following the game, Robinson described Stefanski's speech in the locker room after a previous loss as transformative. "He just brought all the players together and was saying: 'Are we going to let this loss define us? Is this who we're going to be as a team? Or are we going to change this?'" Robinson said, adding that the coach's delivery was reminiscent of Martin Luther King Jr.

Social media users quickly reacted to clips of Robinson's post-game interview, questioning the high praise. Robinson himself later clarified on X, formerly Twitter, writing, "Yup I [sic] just saying stuff sometimes lol. Was a [sic] awesome speech for the team though."

Stefanski addressed the comparison on Friday, offering a lighthearted response. "I don't think Dr. King used as many F-bombs as I did," he told ESPN.

The Falcons' victory over the Packers came after losses to the Steelers and Panthers in the opening two weeks of the season. Robinson was instrumental in the win, rushing for 194 yards and scoring two touchdowns on 29 carries. This performance marked a significant improvement for the Falcons' offense, which had struggled to reach the red zone in the initial games.

In contrast, the Packers' performance drew criticism, with calls for head coach Matt LaFleur to be fired. Despite entering the game as favorites, Green Bay was dominated, particularly on the line of scrimmage. The Packers managed only 17 rushing yards, and their offense faltered after an early Christian Watson touchdown.
