NFC East Teams Fumble Crucial Decisions in Week 5 Losses

Week 5 proved challenging for the NFC East, with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders succumbing to poor decision-making that led to preventable losses. The New York Giants also squandered opportunities in a tough divisional stretch.

The Eagles, depleted by injuries, let an improbable victory slip away in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars. After Jake Elliott kicked a 48-yard field goal with eight seconds remaining to give Philadelphia a 17-16 lead, the Jaguars were left with no timeouts. Under normal situational management, the Eagles should have kicked the ball into the end zone for a touchback, forcing the Jaguars to start their drive from the 35-yard line and needing a long play to get into field goal range. Instead, the ball was kept in play, and Ameer Abdullah returned it 53 yards to the Eagles' 39-yard line. This gave the Jaguars' Cam Little the opportunity to make a 57-yard field goal as time expired, securing a 19-17 victory for Jacksonville.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni took full responsibility for the decision, stating, "I lost us that game." He acknowledged that his players fought hard, and his own decision cost them the win.

The offensive mismanagement leading up to the potential game-winning field goal also drew scrutiny. On first down with the ball at the Jaguars' 34-yard line and 25 seconds left, Jalen Hurts threw an incomplete pass, stopping the clock. A run play would have forced the Jaguars to use their final timeout. On second down, a completion to a receiver who went out of bounds also stopped the clock. The Eagles ultimately ran out of time for a field goal attempt after a short run on third down.

In a similar, though not identical, scenario, the Dallas Cowboys made a different choice in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens in Brazil. After tying the game at 31 with seven seconds left, Dallas elected to kick the ball out of the end zone. However, Baltimore had a timeout, making the touchback not the optimal strategy. Lamar Jackson completed a pass to stop the clock, allowing the Ravens to kick a game-winning 56-yard field goal.

The Jaguars themselves made questionable decisions in the first half and late in the game. Down 14-10 with 6:40 left in the game, Jacksonville passed up a short field goal attempt from Philadelphia's 5-yard line, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence throwing incomplete passes. They also failed to attempt a short field goal in the final minute of the first half, opting instead to run plays after using their timeout.

Meanwhile, in Washington, the Giants and Commanders were locked in a tie in overtime. The Giants had a chance to attempt a 42-yard field goal, but the team opted to get closer. After fumbling the ball, Washington drove to the Giants' 26-yard line. On first down, Rachaad White ran for two yards, leaving under 50 seconds on the clock and no timeouts. Instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock for an immediate field goal attempt, the Commanders huddled. Quarterback Jayden Daniels snapped the ball with 12 seconds remaining and ran, but was tackled, leaving no time for a field goal.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn stated the decision-making process did not fall on Daniels, but on the coaching staff to put the quarterback in a better position to manage the clock for a field goal.

These critical errors in judgment by both the Eagles and Commanders underscore a difficult week for the NFC East, with all four teams experiencing losses or ties, and Dallas having lost on Thursday night to a previously winless Arizona team.
