California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, earned more than $1 million in taxable income annually between 2021 and 2024, according to copies of their federal tax filings released by the governor's office. The filings were made public weeks after Newsom announced that he and his wife are subjects of an ongoing Justice Department investigation, which he has characterized as politically motivated and an attempt to thwart a potential 2028 presidential bid.
Between 2022 and 2024, the couple reported a combined annual income ranging from $1.4 million to $1.6 million, attributed to salaries, investments, profits from blind trusts, and Siebel Newsom's film production company. The governor's office did not release tax information for 2025, citing an extension. In 2021, their income was augmented by over $1 million from the sale of their home in Marin County.
Over the four-year period, the Newsoms paid approximately $2.79 million in federal taxes, representing between 30% and 35% of their earnings. Governor Newsom's salary accounted for about $192,000 annually, while Siebel Newsom's income averaged around $148,000 from her roles as founder of the Representation Project, a nonprofit focused on combating gender stereotypes, and co-founder of the California Partners Project, which advocates for gender equity.
A spokesperson for the governor's office stated that the tax documents demonstrate "consistent financials over the four-year period" and "contradicted the false right-wing claims" that the couple had "enriched themselves" through new ventures and nonprofits.
The Justice Department investigation, reportedly stemming in part from whistleblower complaints regarding the finances of Siebel Newsom's nonprofit, remains active. The couple has reportedly retained attorney Abbe Lowell to represent them in the matter.
