Newsom Admits Daughter Counts Down to His Political Exit, Misfires on Harris Timeline

California Gov. Gavin Newsom appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday, discussing President Trump, upcoming elections, and his own political future. During the interview, Newsom revealed that his 17-year-old daughter is anticipating his departure from public office, with a calendar marking her days until his term ends.

"She has a calendar and she pulls every single day to her liberation day," Newsom said, describing her feelings about his time in politics. Despite this, Newsom, who is considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate, indicated he is still contemplating a run. "I ain’t screwing this one up, man," he stated when discussing the possibility.

A Factual Stumble on Harris's Nomination

The governor also addressed Vice President Kamala Harris, stating he would not challenge her for the Democratic presidential nomination. "She was our nominee just months — it was 18 months or so ago," Newsom declared. Kimmel pointed out the inaccuracy, noting that Harris became the Democratic nominee in August 2024, nearly 27 months prior, and lost the subsequent election to Trump 23 months ago.

Personal Revelations and Political Barbs

Newsom touched on President Trump, suggesting Trump has his "head in the sand, soaked by oil" regarding climate change. Kimmel, in turn, quipped about Newsom’s famously styled hair, asking if that was how he achieved his look. Newsom conceded the point.

In another moment, Newsom alluded to Trump’s past comments about individuals' appearances, stating, "The only ass I care about is the one we’re going to kick on Tuesday." Kimmel later playfully jabbed Newsom about his hair gel. The interview concluded with Kimmel thanking Newsom for his service and jokingly suggesting he apologize to his children.

Newsom also mused about the possibility of dressing as Spider-Man on Halloween and wandering Hollywood Boulevard, after Kimmel suggested his son would prefer seeing him in costume. "I might be on Hollywood Boulevard … rambling to myself," the governor remarked.

Kimmel himself has been involved in a public dispute with Trump, stemming from comments Kimmel made earlier this year. Trump had previously called for Kimmel’s firing after a joke about Melania Trump.
