New York Village Named "Nicest Place in America"
Reader's Digest has recognized Liverpool, New York, a small community of 2,600 residents, for its strong sense of community and volunteerism.
The village of Liverpool, New York, has been named the "nicest place in America" for 2026 by Reader's Digest. This small community, spanning just one square mile and home to approximately 2,600 people, was chosen for its charitable spirit and strong neighborly connections.
Located near Syracuse, Liverpool is characterized by its tree-lined streets, a prominent lake park, and a collection of small businesses. The village's official government website describes it as a "vibrant community on the north shore of Onondaga Lake with unique shops, great restaurants, neighbourhood parks, lovely lakeshore trails, and a warm and welcoming village community."
The primary attraction is Onondaga Lake Park, often referred to as the "Central Park of central New York." The park offers trails, sports facilities, play areas, a skatepark, and bike rentals, making it a popular spot for families.
Liverpool is also known for Heid's of Liverpool, a historic hot dog establishment that has been serving customers since 1917. The restaurant, described as a long-standing Central New York favorite, contributes to the village's nostalgic, retro American atmosphere. An ice cream shop has also recently opened at the location.
Another notable landmark is the Liverpool Cemetery, which hosts themed walking tours focusing on topics such as war veterans and public health.
Residents expressed pride in their community's sense of togetherness. "In a time where everyone is looking straight ahead and just taking care of themselves, it's nice to know that if I get in trouble, I can knock next door and there's someone there that'll open the door and smile," said Liverpool resident Simone McCarthy.
Mayor Stacy Finney attributed the award to a "spirit of volunteerism" within the village. "Because people love the area they live in, they want to enhance it. You’ve got to love where you live, and invest your time where you live," Finney stated.
