New York Tops List of Most Expensive States for Socializing

New York has been identified as the priciest state in the U.S. for socializing, according to a recent study by Manhattan Mental Health Counseling. The research analyzed the costs of everyday social activities against average monthly take-home pay across 48 states to determine where maintaining a social life incurs the highest expenses.

New York secured the top spot with a score of 67.03 out of 100. The state faces notably high costs for entertainment, including movie tickets priced at an average of $22.50, the highest in the nation. An inexpensive meal averages $26.50, with draft beers costing around $8.50 and cappuccinos at $6.50. Residents also contend with an average monthly public transit cost of $140, contributing to a significant portion of their average post-tax paycheck of $5,278.

To quantify these costs, researchers examined average prices at casual restaurants, the cost of cappuccinos and beer, and movie ticket prices. Transit data was compiled by calculating monthly averages for public transportation passes and taxi fares, alongside gas prices.

While New York leads in expense, Washington state follows as the second most costly. Despite having the highest average net monthly salary of $6,281, residents face an average meal cost of $28 and $9 for a beer. Washington has experienced rapid cost-of-living increases over the past decade, with gas prices frequently ranking among the highest nationally and groceries ranking fourth overall.

Rhode Island ranked third, with an average meal price of $30.67. California came in fourth, characterized by high gas prices at $1.46 per liter. Nevada rounded out the top five, with significant grocery expenses and average dinner prices of $25.

In contrast, South Dakota emerged as the most affordable state for socializing, ranking 48th with a score of 31.63. The state offers the cheapest meals in the nation at an average of $14.85, with cappuccinos priced at $4.58. Factors contributing to its affordability include no state income tax and low housing costs, resulting in total annual living expenses around $54,100.

Other budget-friendly states include Kentucky (47th) and Mississippi (46th). Kentucky offers meals at $16.73 and beers at $5.08. Mississippi features more affordable movie tickets at $11.72. Kansas (45th) and Iowa (44th) also ranked low, with inexpensive dining options and low taxi fares, along with beers priced under $5.
