New York Ranks as Second-Most Expensive State for Divorces
A new study reveals the significant financial burden couples face when ending their marriages in the Empire State.

New York has been identified as the second-most expensive state in the U.S. for divorces, with couples collectively spending an average of $27,943 to legally end their marriages, according to recent data from Self Financial.
The study, which analyzed divorce costs across the nation, found that California leads the country as the most expensive state for divorce, with an average joint cost of $29,313. New York follows closely behind, ahead of Texas, Connecticut, and New Jersey, which round out the top five most costly states for divorce.
The average cost for a divorce nationwide is reported to be $10,080. This figure increases by approximately 37.17%, or $3,747, when children are involved, highlighting an additional financial strain on divorcing couples.
Researchers gathered statistics from various sources, including data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to compile their findings. The report points out that the financial consequences of divorce extend beyond legal fees and settlements, often encompassing court costs and the expenses associated with legal representation.
While California and New York present the highest financial hurdles for divorce, states like Montana and New Mexico offer a more affordable alternative, with divorce costs averaging less than $14,000. The study authors emphasize that individuals undergoing divorce must carefully assess their financial obligations, including debts and assets, as they navigate the process of rebuilding their financial lives and embarking on a new chapter.
