New York Post Crowns Best Commuter Shoes for NYC Streets
From durable boots to stylish flats, a rigorous 5.5-mile test across Manhattan reveals the top footwear for navigating city life.
Finding the perfect pair of shoes for a New York City commute presents a unique challenge, balancing comfort, durability, and style for miles of walking and unpredictable urban terrain. In response, The New York Post conducted the "Made It Here Awards 2026," a comprehensive test of 15 commuter shoe models.
The rigorous evaluation involved a 5.5-mile walk from Columbus Circle to Battery Park on a sweltering summer day, pushing each shoe to its limits. The assessment focused on comfort during extended wear, performance on subway stairs, the ability to withstand a quick sprint, traction on various surfaces, water resistance, and the crucial style-to-comfort ratio.
Top Picks in Footwear
Boots
Leading the pack in the boot category are the Margaux The West Chelsea Boot as the best overall. Commerce Reporter Miska Salemann completed the entire test route in these suede boots, noting their "fantastic" traction and solid feel underfoot, even when moving quickly. Despite their luxe appearance, they proved resilient against subway grates and cracked pavement. The boots are also noted for their light water resistance, even in suede options, and a durable lug sole, though they are among the pricier choices.
For a more budget-conscious option, the Steve Madden Jones Boots were recognized as the best relatively budget-friendly choice. Commerce Partnerships Manager Georgie Olmeda found these zip-up boots comfortable for a significant portion of the walk, reporting minimal break-in time and decent traction. While they offer a stylish appearance that rivals more expensive brands, they provide minimal arch support and cushioning.
The Blundstone Vegan Originals 2115 earned the title for best durability. Commerce Reporter Erica Radol highlighted their water-resistant nature and comfortable, cushioned footbed with built-in shock absorption. Though not the most stylish option, their robust construction ensures longevity.
Ballet Flats
In the ballet flats category, Madewell The Greta Glove Flat was named the best overall. Sr. Audience Optimization & Discovery Analyst Alana Bracken navigated six miles, including a jog, with minimal discomfort. She praised their secure, glove-like fit and comfort, noting they did not slide off her heel. The flats are also priced under $100.
The Reformation Bethany Ballet Flat secured the award for best star-worthy style. While its Mary Jane design is fashion-forward, Social Media Editor Brooke Matalon experienced blisters relatively quickly during the break-in period. However, she noted that the flats offered more support than typical ballet flats.
Vivaia Square-Toe Margot Mary Jane 3.0 was recognized for its best color options. Commerce Reporter Nishka Dhawan, however, found these flats caused blisters early on and required padding to manage the commute, suggesting they are better suited for shorter distances.
Heels
For those who prefer heels, the Sole Bliss Carmen was deemed the best overall. Lifestyle Director Natasha Pearlman found them to be the comfiest heels she has ever worn, holding up well after extended office wear and a significant walk. While they may be a bit narrow and less modern in style, their comfort level is exceptional.
The Inez Frida block heel was highlighted as the best block heel. Photo Editor Anissa Lorenzi Boukourizia managed a considerable distance and multiple subway transfers in these stylish, mirrored pumps, impressed by their traction on various surfaces. The 2.5-inch block heel offered more comfort than average heels, though they are priced over $200.
Awarded for shorter commutes, the Aldo Alicieaa heels feature padded insoles from the brand's "Pillow Walk" line. Commerce Partnerships Associate Brooke Parker appreciated their style and relative stability but experienced blisters within 20 minutes, deeming them better suited for transitioning from meetings to an event rather than long-distance commuting.
Loafers
Quince Italian Leather Soft Loafer was named the best overall in the loafer category. Sr. Audience Optimization & Discovery Analyst Meaghan Seward found the soft Italian leather stretched and molded to her feet with minimal break-in period, offering good value at under $85, though she noted a tighter toebox and wished for a trendier design.
The GH Bass Grace Penny Loafer received the award for best timeless classic. VP of Brand Partnerships Ru Wolle noted the quality and durability of the leather, which softened with wear after an initial break-in period. These loafers are also noted for their resilience to light rain.
Coach Leah Loafer was recognized as the best patent leather option. Page Six Style & Shopping Director Elana Fishman found them uncomfortable after several blocks when new but noted their sturdy lug soles provide excellent traction and can handle light rain. Fishman also owns the smooth leather version of the Leah Loafer, which she has walked 20,000 steps in without blisters.
Sneakers
Taking the top spot for best overall sneakers are the Nike Pegasus 42. Senior Audience Optimization & Discovery Strategist Sarah Berman, also a marathon runner, walked over five miles pain-free in these sneakers, praising their comfort and support for casual wear. While not office-appropriate, they are ideal for a pre- or post-commute change.
The Hoka Transport 2 was named the best weather-proof sneaker. Commerce Deputy Editor Holly J Coley declared them the most comfortable pick for comfort-focused individuals, noting their supportive build and suitability for running or walking in inclement weather. However, she deemed them too casual for most office settings.
Alo Sunset Sneaker earned the title for best style. Commerce Reporter Carrie Berk found them very cute but lacking in cushioning and support, recommending them for short-term wear rather than long commutes. The brand also offers other models, the Runner and Recovery Mode, which may provide more substantial support.
The testing process evaluated each shoe on comfort, performance on subway stairs, sprintability, water resistance, traction, and overall style. The Margaux West Chelsea Boot ultimately stood out as the top recommendation for its blend of comfort, durability, and style, while Quince's Italian Leather Soft Loafer was a strong runner-up for its value and comfort.
