New York Penthouse With Gold Dome Sells for $9 Million After Steep Price Cut
A luxury Fifth Avenue penthouse that was once listed for $25 million has sold for $9 million at auction, marking a 64% reduction from its initial asking price.
A five-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom penthouse in Manhattan's Sohmer Piano Building, distinguished by its prominent gold dome, has sold for $9 million. The sale, which occurred at auction, represents a significant price reduction from its original listing price of $25 million.
The penthouse, located at 170 Fifth Avenue, spent over 500 days on the market before finding a buyer. After its debut in November 2024 at $25 million, the asking price was later reduced to $14.9 million. The property was eventually turned over to Concierge Auctions, which projected opening bids between $6 million and $9 million.
Bidding commenced at $8.25 million after the reserve price was met, with the final sale price recorded at $9 million. The buyer is listed as White Piano LLC, an entity with an East 20th Street mailing address.
The seller, tech mogul Greg Carr, had purchased the raw space for $7.2 million in 2001. Carr, who previously founded Boston Technology and chaired Prodigy, is now dedicating significant resources to wildlife conservation efforts in Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park. All proceeds from the sale of the penthouse are designated for the Gorongosa Project.
Carr had expressed a deep connection to the property, stating that its architectural history was a primary draw. He described his time in the penthouse as a "magnificent act" of his life. The roughly 5,700-square-foot duplex features more than 40 oversized windows, a greenhouse-style window expanse, two foyers connected by a circular limestone staircase, and a private roof deck.
Listing brokers highlighted the unique features of the penthouse, including the golden dome and expansive views of the Manhattan skyline. Concierge Auctions CEO Chad Roffers noted that the auction process provided a competitive and time-defined environment for the sale of the landmark property.
