New York has been identified as the most haunted state in the United States, according to a new survey by Casino.ca. The study found that New York has recorded over 160,000 reported ghost sightings in the past century, equating to 81 sightings per 10,000 people. This figure places New York significantly ahead of second-place Texas and third-place Louisiana.

The state is home to several locations known for reported paranormal activity, including historic landmarks in New York City. These sites are said to be frequented by notable figures from history and culture.

Morris-Jumel Mansion

The Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights is described as a site with numerous lingering spirits. Angela Artuso, Director of the Gotham Paranormal Research Society, noted that Vice President Aaron Burr and his wife, Eliza Jumel, are among the reported entities. Artuso’s team has investigated the mansion multiple times, reporting disembodied voices and apparitions. During one investigation, a "horrible-sounding disembodied voice" was recorded in Burr’s bedroom.

Eliza Jumel is said to haunt the mansion's balcony, and the spirit of a Hessian soldier who died on the premises is also believed to be present. The mansion is also known as the place where Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the musical "Hamilton."

Fraunces Tavern

Located in New York City, Fraunces Tavern is another site with a reported history of paranormal activity. The tavern, where George Washington reportedly celebrated the end of the Revolutionary War, is said to be home to the ghost of Anna Gardie, a French dancer and one of America’s early ballet stars. Gardie and her husband are believed to be involved in a murder-suicide at the boarding house above the tavern in 1798.

Investigators have also reported hearing unexplained sounds of partying and chatter. Artuso recounted an instance where a male spirit’s voice was detected in the Long Room, where Washington bid farewell to his troops, audibly questioning the presence of female investigators.

George Washington historical memorabilia is on display in the upstairs museum at Fraunces Tavern in New York, Friday, Feb. 10, 2012.

Chelsea Hotel

The Chelsea Hotel in Manhattan is widely considered one of the city's most haunted landmarks, with numerous deaths occurring within its walls over the years. While the Gotham Paranormal Research Society has not officially investigated the hotel, Artuso reported sensing a
