The boyfriend of a New York mother found dead in her Irish home allegedly asked her for a significant sum of money about a week before her death, according to reports.
Jamey Carney, 43, who moved to Killarney, Ireland, from Westchester County, New York, in May 2021, reportedly told a friend that her boyfriend, Ahmad Al-Saqar, requested the equivalent of approximately $5,700 shortly before she was found deceased in her bed. Carney is believed to have been beaten and then suffocated.
Al-Saqar, an asylum seeker from Jordan, is now sought for questioning by authorities in connection with Carney's murder. He is believed to have fled Ireland in the hours after her death, potentially heading to the Middle East via Turkey.
Investigators are examining Carney's phone records, social media activity, and bank statements as part of their ongoing probe into her death. Neighbors reported hearing an argument coming from Carney's rented home before her death.
Carney and Al-Saqar reportedly met at a pro-Palestine rally in Killarney about 18 months prior. Social media posts show the couple together, and Al-Saqar reportedly told friends that they had participated in a religious marriage ceremony earlier this year. A former roommate, Husam Salha, told the Irish Independent that Al-Saqar claimed they were wed in the Islamic faith, citing a TikTok video where he referred to Carney as "My bride and my princess" and showed her wearing a ring.
Salha stated that Al-Saqar told him they had gone to a mosque and accepted each other as husband and wife, explaining that in Islam, such a union is typically announced publicly. Salha learned of Carney's death and Al-Saqar's departure when he returned to his accommodation and found police present. He told authorities that they questioned him for several hours, took his phone, and asked him to call Al-Saqar, whose phone was still active but unanswered.
Carney was previously married to an Irish national living in Killarney. Her mother and sister have traveled to Ireland to care for her 13-year-old daughter.
