New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Backlash From Progressive Base
The Democratic Socialist mayor has encountered protests and criticism following his attendance at an October 7th vigil and his interactions with Donald Trump.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing increasing pressure from the progressive and pro-Palestinian sectors of the left that supported his rise to power. The week has seen him accused of being a "traitor" by protesters and questioned by supporters over his meetings with former President Donald Trump.
Mamdani, an avowed Democratic Socialist, was confronted by demonstrators on Wednesday at a Union Square vigil marking the third anniversary of Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Protesters chanted "traitor" and "sellout" at the mayor, who stood stone-faced before leaving the memorial without addressing the crowd. He was later approached by an activist outside a Palestinian restaurant who yelled, "Stop being a f***ing traitor."
The following day, Mamdani faced further criticism as he spoke about the shooting of 28-year-old Oscar Bergal, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, by ICE agents in northern Manhattan. Protesters chanted "Mamdani is complicit" during his remarks, making it difficult for him to be heard. Mamdani, who called for ICE to be abolished, spoke alongside NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who has also faced criticism from the left.
Adding to the friction, some of Mamdani's supporters have begun questioning his decision to repeatedly meet with former President Donald Trump, most recently at Gracie Mansion in September. Mamdani told The New York Times that he met with Trump "to ensure that we're using every opportunity we have to deliver for this city," but he was reportedly unable to persuade Trump to release Bergal despite multiple calls.
Mamdani ally and Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, called for Tisch to step down following the ICE shooting incident and subsequent police actions. Chevalier stated, "The NYPD spent more time protecting a militia that just shot someone than protecting New Yorkers." However, Mamdani affirmed that Tisch would remain as police commissioner, adding that he and Tisch would review the events of the past 24 hours.
Bergal was reportedly shot by ICE while driving with his 5-year-old son. His lawyer indicated that Bergal remained in a Brooklyn federal jail with a bullet still in his body. The NYPD had been criticized for pushing anti-ICE protesters to the ground shortly after the shooting.
David Carlucci, a Democratic strategist and former New York state senator, commented on the challenges Mamdani faces. "The transition from activist to executive is one of the toughest challenges in politics," Carlucci told The Wall Street Journal.
