A New York man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2022 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Azsia Johnson, who was pushing their infant daughter in a stroller at the time of the attack. A jury convicted Isaac Argro in May of murder.
Prosecutors stated that Argro shot Johnson, 20, at close range in the temple on June 29, 2022, on a street near a Manhattan playground. Argro had reportedly persuaded Johnson to meet him so he could give her items for their 3-month-old daughter. The baby was not injured during the incident.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described Johnson as a “loving parent who left an abusive relationship and began to rebuild her life.” Bragg added that her “dreams of moving forward were brought to a horrific end” by Argro.
According to prosecutors, Argro had a history of physically and emotionally abusing Johnson. Although she had left him, she was determined to attempt co-parenting, the district attorney's office said earlier this year.
Johnson had informed a relative via text message about her planned meeting with Argro to collect the baby items, according to prosecutors. Argro was arrested two days after the shooting.
Then-Mayor Eric Adams and other officials attended a vigil for Johnson the day after her death. Supporters have continued to place her photo at the shooting site annually on the anniversary of her death.
