New York Man Dies Days After Central Park Cycling Collision

A father of two, Rich O'Brien, 41, has died after being hit by a cyclist in New York City's Central Park. O'Brien was walking to work on Wednesday around 6:36 a.m. near West 84th Street when the collision occurred. He fell and suffered severe head trauma, passing away peacefully on Sunday morning with his wife by his side.

The cyclist, who was on a pedal bike, sustained minor injuries and was thrown from his bicycle. A witness, Laura Sackler, described the cyclist as appearing "very shocked and confused," and "clearly emotionally devastated."

O'Brien, identified as a Steamfitter with Local 638, was transported to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition. A GoFundMe page established for the family stated that O'Brien was on his way to work, a routine he followed daily to provide for his family. His legacy will also continue through organ donation, as he was able to give life to others in his final moments.

Friends and family have expressed deep grief over the loss. Jenicia O'Brien, his sister-in-law, called him "deeply loved, cherished and will forever hold a special place in the hearts of everyone who knew him." A longtime friend, Felicia Hettrich, described him as "the best person I have ever known," highlighting his dedication as a father and husband. Another friend, Matt Hettrich, considered O'Brien a brother, noting his selfless nature and willingness to help others.

A funeral service is scheduled for Friday in Port Jefferson Station.
