Moises Freire, 19, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the death of Annabel Richter, 21, at the Fashion Institute of Technology in March. According to law enforcement, Freire supplied Richter with tainted drugs that led to her death and subsequently sent photos of her body via text message.
Richter was found unresponsive in an all-female dormitory at the prestigious New York City college. The indictment against Freire includes charges of supplying the drugs that caused Richter's death. Authorities have also alleged that Freire engaged in sexual assault during the events leading to Richter's demise.
During a court appearance, Freire maintained his innocence on the charges. He appeared somber in court, though at one point, he was observed to have a moment where his demeanor shifted, described by observers as a 'mask slipping.' When asked if he had a message for Richter's family, Freire conveyed his condolences.
Richter, an international student from Brazil, did not have family present in court for the proceedings, a situation reportedly made more difficult due to her distance from home. The trial is ongoing, with legal proceedings unfolding in Manhattan.
