New York Leads Nation in Botox Obsession, Study Finds

New York has been identified as the most Botox-obsessed state in the United States, according to a recent report from Avinity Health. The "Botox Obsession Index" analyzed demand, provider density, and search interest to rank states by their fixation on the popular cosmetic procedure.

Empire State residents exhibit the highest search interest, with an estimated 202 Botox-related searches per month per 100,000 residents. This intensity narrowly edged out Colorado, which secured the second position by a margin of just 0.07 points. California, Florida, and Massachusetts followed, rounding out the top five states with the highest Botox fixation. New Jersey ranked eighth.

"New Yorkers are officially the most Botox-obsessed people in America," said Emily Dawson, co-founder and Clinical Director of Avinity Health. "What pushed New York to No. 1 was demand. New Yorkers search for Botox more often per capita than people in any other state."

Plastic surgeons attribute New York's top ranking to its population's discerning nature and receptiveness to aesthetic advancements. Dr. Laura Devgan, a New York-based plastic surgeon, noted that the fast-paced environment of the state aligns with Botox's appeal as a high-gratification procedure with minimal downtime.

Devgan also suggests that New York's influence extends to the aesthetic itself, projecting a trend toward polished, understated, and natural-looking results that she believes is ahead of the national curve. Despite the high demand, New York ranks seventh in terms of Botox providers and clinics per resident, marking the widest gap between search interest and availability among all states.

"Attention and access do not sit in the same places," Dawson explained. "New York generates more estimated Botox searches per resident than any other state while ranking seventh for providers and clinics per resident, the widest gap in the index where searching runs ahead of supply."

However, industry professionals suggest this gap reflects a focus on expertise rather than a shortage. Devgan emphasized that developing the necessary anatomical knowledge for safe and effective Botox administration requires years of training, and New York's rigorous licensing and scope-of-practice requirements ensure high standards of care.

Beyond wrinkle reduction, the study highlighted a significant interest in masseter Botox, targeting the jaw muscle. US residents searched for masseter Botox approximately 74,020 times per month, making it the second most searched term after "Botox" itself. This application can help with temporomandibular joint disorders, teeth grinding, and headaches, although potential side effects include asymmetry or muscle bulging if not administered correctly.

While New York leads in Botox obsession, Florida has the highest saturation of providers, followed by Idaho and Arizona. Conversely, Mississippi, West Virginia, Iowa, Arkansas, and Indiana showed the least interest in Botox according to the study. The report also noted that high income does not necessarily correlate with high Botox interest, as some of America's wealthiest states ranked lower on the index, while regionality, particularly the West and Northeast, appears to play a role.

Other states with a notable gap between demand and supply for Botox include Virginia, Illinois, and Washington. The study also noted that Botox is increasingly used for a variety of applications beyond facial wrinkles, including neck contouring, brow lifts, gummy smile correction, trapezius debulking, and reducing underarm sweating.
