New York Knicks Unsure About White House Visit Despite Owner's Acceptance of Trump's Invitation
Team is still internally discussing whether to accept a traditional championship visit following their NBA title win.
The New York Knicks are currently engaged in internal discussions regarding a potential White House visit following their NBA Championship victory, despite owner James Dolan's earlier acceptance of an invitation from President Donald Trump.
Traditionally, the reigning champions of major professional sports leagues are invited to the White House. However, the NBA has had a complex relationship with such visits during Trump's presidency. No NBA team visited the White House during Trump's first term, and this trend has continued since his re-election in 2024.
Despite the general trend, Knicks owner James Dolan has a close personal relationship with President Trump. Dolan invited Trump to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, where the two were seen sitting together. In the aftermath of the game, Dolan stated that he had accepted an invitation from Trump and intended to bring his players to Washington D.C.
"We just received an invitation from the White House, which we accepted," Dolan said on WFAN in June. "We still have to figure out the details, etcetera, but yes, of course, I mean, look, I invited the President to come down to the game…He is a friend. I've known him for 30 years, and I'm very proud to bring the team to the White House."
However, ahead of the new season, Knicks manager Mike Brown indicated that a final decision has not been made. "No, it's still something that our guys, or the organization, is internally discussing and, you know, whatever we decide to do, we'll all do together," Brown stated.
Following the Knicks' championship win, their first since 1973, Trump congratulated the team on his Truth Social platform. "What a year it has been but, even more so, what incredible playoff wins we have all witnessed, especially the last four - Maybe the greatest in the history of basketball," Trump wrote on Sunday, June 14.
Knicks players have offered reserved responses when asked about the possibility of a White House visit. Star player Jalen Brunson told Variety after winning the title, "That's something that we actually haven't discussed as a team. And so obviously, people are making assumptions and saying everything, but together we haven't discussed it yet. And so we'll cross our bridge when we get to it."
Jose Alvarado, a New York native, responded to a question from TMZ about attending by saying, "If there's a chance, I'm going wherever my teammates go."
