The New York Jets are four weeks away from their season opener against the Tennessee Titans, and significant questions remain about the team's composition. As training camp progresses, several position battles and unit strengths are under scrutiny.
Secondary Safety Competition
The Jets bolstered their secondary by acquiring veteran Minkah Fitzpatrick, but the other starting safety position remains undecided. Andre Cisco is currently the frontrunner, though his performance has raised concerns. Dane Belton, a former Giant, has been making plays in camp and could potentially secure the role. Malachi Moore, a 2025 draft pick, is considered a long shot to start.
Backup Quarterback Battle
Geno Smith is the established starter at quarterback, but the backup role is less clear. The Jets are giving fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik an opportunity to claim the backup job. Klubnik has shown inconsistency in training camp, making the upcoming preseason games crucial for his evaluation. Bailey Zappe has also had some strong moments, but the backup position appears to be Klubnik's to lose. General Manager Darren Mougey might explore acquiring a veteran backup if the team has reservations about Klubnik and Zappe.
Offensive Line Stability
While the offensive line is often cited as a strength, questions persist about its interior. Armand Membou is expected to have a strong season, and Olu Fashanu has shown promise. However, concerns remain regarding the performance of center Josh Myers and guards Joe Tippmann and Dylan Parham. The depth of the offensive line is also a point of concern, as the team relied on the same five starters for every game last season, a scenario unlikely to repeat.
Kicker Competition
Following the offseason departure of kicker Nick Folk, who had a successful 2025 season before signing with the Falcons, the Jets are holding a competition between Cade York and Jason Sanders. York possesses a stronger leg, while Sanders brings more experience. The competition has been close throughout training camp, and preseason performances are expected to be decisive.
Run Defense Effectiveness
The Jets ranked 29th in the NFL in run defense last season, an area they aimed to improve this offseason by adding size to the roster. However, early training camp practices and joint sessions with the Buccaneers have not inspired confidence. The absence of key run defenders T'Vondre Sweat and Joseph Ossai due to injuries, as well as an injury to Kinsley Enagbare, has created problematic matchups against the run. The team may have to navigate the season with a vulnerable run defense if these issues persist or if injuries continue to impact the lineup.
