New York High School to Discipline Students for Offensive Football Game Signs

Sachem School District on Long Island has announced it will discipline students who displayed crude and offensive signs targeting the girlfriends of players from a rival football team. The incident occurred during a game on Friday between Sachem and William Floyd.

Superintendent Patti Trombetta issued an apology to the William Floyd community for the behavior, stating that the messages displayed do not align with the district's expectations for sportsmanship and respect. "This behavior will not be tolerated," Trombetta said in a letter to parents. "It is our responsibility to support our students while holding them accountable for their actions and helping them understand the impact of their choices."

One sign reportedly featured a player and his girlfriend with a question about who was "easier to score on," while another made a vulgar remark about scoring with opponents' girlfriends. Security personnel at the game intervened and confiscated the signs once they were noticed.

The game, which Sachem won 35-13, also saw a confrontation and a scuffle involving some students and a girlfriend of a William Floyd player who was depicted on one of the signs. A relative of that player claimed she was spat on during the incident.

Sources at the game indicated that many Sachem students were also appalled by the signs and attempted to intervene. The school district stated it will continue to emphasize the importance of sportsmanship, respect, and responsibility moving forward.
