A grandmother from Mechanicville, New York, is suspected of poisoning her daughter and four grandchildren before their bodies were discovered in an apartment on Tuesday, according to police.
Amy Steadman, 64, was found deceased along with her daughter, Sarah Myers, 44, and four grandchildren, Harper, 13, Hudson, 11, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn. Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt stated that evidence, including a handwritten note and bottles of prescription and over-the-counter medicines found in the home, strongly suggests Steadman was involved in the deaths. Rabbitt indicated that toxicology reports are pending to finalize conclusions.
Autopsies conducted by the Albany Medical Center revealed that one of the four children died from "fatal sharp-force injuries," Rabbitt confirmed. Further details on this specific cause of death were not immediately available.
Myers and her children resided in a separate apartment within the same John S Moore Homes development building. Police discovered the bodies around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday after the family had not been seen for several days.
Sources also suggested that Steadman harbored resentment after the grandchildren's father recently gained custody of them. Neighbors described Steadman and Myers as being very close, with one resident stating that Steadman was with Myers "every single day to help her."
The Mechanicville Police Department, in conjunction with the New York State Police, is conducting a comprehensive investigation. Chief Rabbitt acknowledged the close-knit nature of the Mechanicville community and extended condolences to all affected by the tragedy.
