New York Governor's Race Tightens as Hochul and Blakeman Approach First Debate

The race for New York governor has become a near tie as incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul faces a challenge from Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, according to a recent Pollfinity survey. The poll indicates Hochul leading Blakeman 47% to 44%, with 6% of voters undecided and another 3% planning to vote for third-party candidates. When undecided voters were pressed for a leaning, the margin narrowed further, with the candidates standing at 48% to 44%.

This latest Pollfinity survey, which polled 499 New Yorkers between October 8 and 12, contrasts with earlier polls that suggested a more comfortable lead for Hochul. A poll conducted by Emerson College and PIX 11 on October 8, surveying 900 voters, showed Hochul ahead by 12 points (52% to 40%). Earlier in September, a Siena University poll indicated Hochul held a 10-point advantage (50% to 40%).

The recent tightening of the race signals a notable shift since June, when Hochul led Blakeman by 10 points (50% to 40%). The Pollfinity poll also revealed low approval ratings for Governor Hochul, with 53% disapproving of her performance since taking office in 2022, compared to 43% who approve.

The first and only gubernatorial debate between Hochul and Blakeman is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
