New York Early Voting Begins, With Key Races for House Control and Statewide Offices

Early voting has commenced in New York, offering Empire State residents the opportunity to cast ballots in races that could significantly influence the composition of the U.S. House of Representatives and state leadership.

Statewide Contests

Incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul is seeking another term, facing Republican challenger Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Hochul, who became governor in 2021 following Andrew Cuomo's resignation, is a moderate Democrat whose campaign has focused on collaboration with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on initiatives like expanded childcare. Blakeman, who has secured an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, has centered his campaign on issues of crime and tax reduction.

A recent Quinnipiac University poll indicates Hochul leading Blakeman 55% to 41% among likely New York State voters.

In the race for attorney general, incumbent Democrat Letitia James is running against Republican Saritha Komatireddy, a former DEA Chief of Staff. James gained national recognition for her lawsuit against Donald Trump, his company, and his family concerning allegations of net worth inflation. Komatireddy's campaign has utilized the slogan "just fight crime."

Congressional Races

The election features several closely watched congressional contests, particularly in suburban areas. Republicans are working to defend seats against Democratic challenges in districts north of New York City and in the Adirondack region.

New York's 17th Congressional District, located in the lower Hudson Valley, is considered one of the country's most high-profile races. Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler is competing against Democrat Cait Conley in a district that encompasses a diverse population, including former President Bill Clinton and numerous finance professionals and police officers. Both Trump and former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg have campaigned in the district to support their respective party's candidate.

Another competitive race is in the 3rd Congressional District, which spans Nassau County and Queens. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi is challenged by Republican Michael LiPetri.

Further upstate, in New York's 21st Congressional District, Democrats are aiming to flip a seat previously held by Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, who opted not to seek reelection. The Republican candidate, Anthony Constantino, a CEO endorsed by Trump, is facing Democratic farmer Blake Gendebien. Issues such as tariffs and U.S.-Canada relations are prominent in this district.

Early voting concludes on November 1, with Election Day on November 3.
