New York City is set to commemorate the United States' 250th birthday with a series of large-scale events spanning several days. The celebrations will include a significant naval presence, aerial performances, a major fireworks display, and a special Times Square ball drop.

The centerpiece of the festivities will be the "Sail 4th 250" event, featuring the largest parade of vessels ever to enter the Port of New York and New Jersey. More than 80 ships from international militaries and 150 aircraft are scheduled to participate over six days. A preliminary parade of 24 tall ships will sail down the East River on July 3, followed by the Grand Parade of Sail on July 4, which will include 43 Class A and 22 Class B tall ships. These vessels will sail into the Hudson River, past the Statue of Liberty. From July 5-7, the public will have the opportunity to tour the docked tall ships free of charge with reserved tickets.

Fleet Week, traditionally held on Memorial Day weekend, has been rescheduled to coincide with the semiquincentennial. Active-duty members from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard will be in New York Harbor from July 3 to July 8. The International Naval Review 250 will take place on July 4, showcasing 37 U.S. and allied naval vessels from 22 nations. Following the review, the public can tour these vessels and witness military demonstrations, including search-and-rescue aviation displays and drill team performances.

The U.S. Navy's elite flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, will perform an air show over the Port of New York and New Jersey on July 4. This display will be part of the International Aerial Review, featuring over 100 U.S. and allied aircraft. The Blue Angels' annual show, typically held on Long Island for Memorial Day, was moved to honor the nation's 250th birthday.

In a nod to New Year's Eve traditions, the Times Square ball will drop eight times between July 3 and July 4. The initial drop will occur at midnight EDT on July 3, coinciding with midnight in Guam, and the final drop at 7 a.m. EDT on July 4, marking midnight in American Samoa. The centerpiece drop will occur at 11:59 p.m. EDT on July 3, signaling the official arrival of July 4 for the Eastern Time Zone.

Macy's will present its annual July 4th fireworks show, which will also mark the company's 50th anniversary. The display will feature 85,000 shells, an increase from the previous year, and will include pyrotechnic animations, an inverted rainbow effect over the Brooklyn Bridge, and a wide flag display. The show, requiring extensive preparation by a 75-person crew, will illuminate the city's skyline.
