A novel photo booth in New York City is drawing long queues of singles eager to find love outside the digital realm of dating apps. The 'Missed Connections' photo booth, located near Union Square in Manhattan, launched in late July and offers a unique approach to matchmaking.
For $10, participants pose for photos, complete a questionnaire, and receive a printed photograph of a potential romantic match along with their first name. The challenge lies in tracking down this individual, as no contact information is provided. Despite this hurdle, many are successfully connecting with the help of social media.
One such success story involves Danny Garcia and Afrin Talukder, who met through the photo booth and are now dating. Garcia shared his experience on TikTok, posting a video with Talukder's photo and name. Within two hours, he had connected with someone who provided her Instagram account, leading to a date.
"I was going to bed and saw my phone blowing up with a bunch of people tagging me," Talukder told ABC, recounting her discovery of Garcia's video. "I [saw his video] and thought, 'Wow, this photo booth actually worked, there's someone who actually matched with me. This is cool."
The photo booth is a collaboration between the matchmaking service Matchbox and the social media account Meet Cutes NYC. Liam McGregor, co-founder of Matchbox, stated that over 3,500 people have received matches since the booth opened. He described the concept as "rom-com coded," emphasizing its whimsical appeal rather than positioning it as a direct replacement for dating apps.
"If you want to find someone to go on a date with this Friday, I would not recommend going to the photobooth," McGregor said. "But it has this whimsy and this magical feeling of there's someone out there for me."
The photo booth is expected to operate through August, with hopes of expanding to other cities based on its initial success in New York City. Thousands of videos on TikTok document users sharing their matches in hopes of finding their potential partners.
