New York City is preparing for its first heat wave of the season, with temperatures potentially climbing to 100 degrees Fahrenheit this week. The extreme heat is expected to coincide with several major events, including the World Cup knockout stages, the 250th anniversary of the Fourth of July, and a highly publicized wedding.
<]]>Temperatures are forecast to reach the mid-90s by Tuesday and could surpass 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday, with the “real feel” temperature potentially reaching between 105 and 110 degrees. Extreme heat watch warnings have also been issued for all New Jersey counties from July 1 to July 4.
This period of intense heat arrives as the region prepares to host significant events. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey is scheduled to host a World Cup match between France and Sweden on Tuesday, with another game set for July 5. Additionally, Madison Square Garden in Manhattan is slated to host wedding celebrations on July 3, which are expected to cause street closures and attract over 1,000 guests.
The city is also gearing up for Fourth of July celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Events like the Sail4th 250 & Macy’s Fireworks display along the Hudson River are expected to draw large crowds to waterfront areas in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a warning advising residents to take precautions against the heat, emphasizing that heat impacts are cumulative and health risks can increase daily. She recommended minimizing outdoor time for vulnerable groups such as children and pets and urged people to stay hydrated, check on neighbors, and conserve energy. "Our top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe and taking every step to prepare for this event," Hochul stated.
