New York Archdiocese Agrees to $800M Payout for Sex Abuse Claims

The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to a settlement totaling more than $800 million to resolve nearly 1,300 claims of sexual abuse. The allegations involve clergy members and other individuals in leadership positions within the Roman Catholic Church.

Lawyers representing the plaintiffs informed priests of the archdiocese about the tentative settlement late Friday. The agreement is contingent on all parties, including the plaintiffs, their legal representatives, and the archdiocese, signing off on the terms. Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks confirmed the details of the proposed settlement on Saturday, emphasizing the need for final signatures.

"We are on the verge of being able to, please God, bring some measure of healing and reconciliation to all victim-survivors," Hicks stated to The New York Times.

Under the proposed settlement, each claimant would have the option to receive a lump-sum payment of at least $250,000. Some claimants may receive larger sums following a review of the extent of abuse they have experienced.

Attorneys for the alleged victims have cautioned their clients that rejection of the settlement could lead the archdiocese to file for bankruptcy. Such a move would likely result in smaller payouts for victims and prolong the litigation process.

For those who do not wish to accept the current offer, the archdiocese has negotiated with an insurer to allocate $20 million for such claimants. This fund would be split evenly among those who opt out of the main settlement. The archdiocese encompasses Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and parts of the Hudson Valley.
