New 'Strictly Come Dancing' Presenters Face Mixed Reactions on Opening Night

The latest season of Strictly Come Dancing kicked off with a new presenting lineup, featuring Josh Widdicombe, Emma Willis, and Johannes Radebe. However, the debut live show on Saturday night saw the new trio facing mixed reactions from viewers, with Widdicombe, in particular, drawing comments about his role and receiving a playful jab from judge Motsi Mabuse.

Widdicombe, positioned on the dance floor alongside Willis, took over the presenting duties previously handled by Tess Daly. Radebe interviewed celebrities from the auditorium, a role similar to Claudia Winkleman's. This division of labor led some viewers to feel Widdicombe appeared as a "spare part" next to the more experienced Willis. He also reportedly missed his cue twice during the broadcast.

Amidst the performances, Widdicombe found himself on the receiving end of a sassy remark from Mabuse. Following judge Craig Revel Horwood's critique of Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey, Mabuse agreed with Revel Horwood, prompting him to joke about moving on to Shirley Ballas. Widdicombe then jokingly called out "Shirley!" to skip over Mabuse's feedback. Mabuse responded with a playful "Well are we going to be friends or enemies, you choose now!", which Widdicombe and the audience took in good humor. Fans also debated the new hosting structure. "I'm not going to be one of the people hating on Josh. For me the problem is that three hosts just aren't needed. The celebrity lineup, previously described by some as "the worst ever," seemed to warm to viewers as the show progressed. The strategy of casting reality stars and social media influencers with large online followings, similar to 'Dancing With The Stars' in the US, appears to be an effort by producers to attract younger demographics. This includes figures like Kim Kardashian's hairstylist Chris Appleton and sports YouTuber John Nellis, who boasts over 15 million subscribers.

However, the core audience for Strictly Come Dancing remains older, with approximately 60 percent of viewers aged 55 or over. This season's cast includes a mix of actors, athletes, and personalities, aiming to appeal to both a younger online audience and the show's established viewership.
