New Series and Films
The three-part Netflix docuseries "The One About Matthew Perry" revisits the life of the late "Friends" star. Directed by Mary Robertson, the series utilizes interviews with Perry's sister, Mia Perry Bowick, along with friends and collaborators, incorporating previously unseen photos and videos. The premiere follows nearly three years after the actor's death.
"Minions & Monsters," the third "Minions" movie and seventh in the "Despicable Me" franchise, debuts on Peacock. Directed by Pierre Coffin, who voices the Minions, the film is set in the 1920s and follows the characters as they become silent movie stars in Hollywood, embarking on the creation of a monster movie. AP film writer Mark Kennedy noted the film's playful references to old screen stars, but observed that younger audiences might not recognize them while their parents might be too fatigued to appreciate them.
Paramount+ will feature "Hanging by a Wire," a documentary by director Mohammed Ali Naqvi chronicling a 2023 rescue in Pakistan. The film uses archival footage and firsthand accounts to detail the dramatic rescue of eight individuals suspended in a cable car after a wire broke.
Julian Fellowes' period drama "The Gilded Age" returns for its fourth season on HBO Max. The new season sees Carrie Coon's character, Bertha Russell, dealing with the repercussions of her social ascent, while Christine Baranski's Agnes van Rhijn seeks to regain her standing. Jim Gaffigan is set to appear as President Grover Cleveland.
"The Mob," a Hulu competition series from the producers of "The Traitors," will be hosted by Parker Posey. Twelve celebrities, including Aida Turturro, Bruno Tonioli, Debi Mazar, and Joe Gorga, will reside in an Italian villa and participate in tasks inspired by mob movies. The winner can receive up to $250,000. The group will select a "don" who will determine who is paid and who is eliminated. The series premieres with new episodes released weekly.
On Apple TV, "Nocturne" stars Liev Schreiber as a former soldier and homicide detective who relocates to a small Pennsylvania town. His move is disrupted when a serial killer, portrayed by Stephen Graham, targets the community and his family. Zazie Beetz co-stars as an FBI agent. The 10-episode series is adapted from Lars Kepler's novels "Lazarus" and "The Sandman."
Michael C. Hall reprises his role as Dexter Morgan in the second season of "Dexter: Resurrection" on Paramount+. The new season finds him confronting two killers in New York, one with a long history and a new adversary, while also navigating middle age. Dan Stevens and Brian Cox join the cast, and Uma Thurman returns.
New Music Releases
Reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee is releasing "La Postal," a 15-track concept album. Each song on the album is described as a love letter to different forms of love, including romantic, familial, and self-love. The first single released from the album is "BOTZ (Kiss Me Again)."
The Canadian rock band Nickelback will release their 11th studio album, "Everything Under the Sun." The album is expected to feature their signature style of hooks and rock riffs, with guest appearances from Sammy Hagar and actor Ryan Reynolds.
Country music star Dustin Lynch is releasing his seventh studio album, "Clean Slate." The 12-track album features radio-ready songs that touch on themes of falling in love, missing someone, reflecting on past decisions, and discovering what is important when life quiets down.
Video Game Releases
"Phantom Blade Zero," developed by Beijing-based S-Game, aims to establish a new genre called "Kungfupunk." The game follows an elite assassin named Soul, who has 66 days to live after being framed for his master's murder. Players can expect a blend of martial arts, steampunk machinery, and occult elements, with a focus on sword combat.
"Terrible Lizards" is the debut release from WDR Studios. In this game, players explore a subterranean environment filled with monstrous beasts and must use running, jumping, and climbing skills to escape without weapons. The game is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
