New South Wales is set to implement a significant change to its road rules, allowing drivers to exceed the temporary reduced speed limits in roadwork zones when no workers are on site. This new standard, introduced by the Minns government and managed by Transport for NSW, aims to alleviate driver frustration and improve traffic flow.
Under the revised regulations, drivers will not be compelled to slow down to 40 km/h through roadworks if no work is actively being conducted. The state government has stated that the previous enforcement of speed limits after hours disproportionately affected drivers, particularly in regional areas where speed limits could drop drastically even when work was not in progress.
The updated rules stipulate that temporary speed limits can be increased outside of work hours and when no personnel are present, provided the conditions are safe for motorists and pedestrians. Roads Minister for Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison, emphasized that the changes are designed to enhance efficiency and reduce unnecessary delays for travelers.
"Motorists across NSW deserve to spend less time stuck in unnecessary traffic and more time with family and friends, which is why we have made this important change," Aitchison stated. "This change will help traffic keep moving, reduce frustration for motorists and make journeys across the state more efficient."
Aitchison also reassured the public that worker safety remains a priority and would not be compromised by these adjustments. "Protecting construction workers and motorists around worksites is critical. We are not changing or weakening any rules around safety," she said. "But as everyone has experienced, leaving speed restrictions in place outside of construction hours often slows down traffic movement."
The announcement follows similar modifications to roadwork speed limit regulations in Victoria and South Australia. The changes are intended to allow for a more dynamic application of speed limits, adjusting based on the presence of work crews and safety conditions.
