A wave of Democratic victories in the recent midterm elections has propelled several new figures into the U.S. Senate, bringing their partners into public view. Among the newly elected senators are Abdul El-Sayed, Chris Pappas, and James Talarico, all of whom relied on the support of their partners during their campaigns.

Abdul El-Sayed, 42, made history by becoming the first Muslim to win a Senate seat in the United States, defeating Republican Mike Rogers. His wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist, stood by his side throughout his campaign and at his victory celebration. The couple met at the University of Michigan, where Jukaku recalled El-Sayed proposing to her as a freshman. El-Sayed told The Michigan Daily that his Islamic faith influenced his decision to marry young, stating that "Islamically, there are no premarital relations of any sort... Given that, the logical solution is to get married." El-Sayed and Dr. Jukaku, who holds degrees from Oxford and Columbia, live in Ann Arbor with their two daughters.

Chris Pappas, 46, secured a U.S. Senate seat in New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the Senate. His husband, Vann Bentley, an attorney specializing in technology policy, cybersecurity, and privacy, was present at his victory speech. Pappas and Bentley became engaged in December 2021 and married in February 2023. During his speech, Pappas thanked Bentley, saying, "I want to thank the guy next to me, my amazing husband, Van." He added that "love and truth prevailed tonight."

James Talarico, 37, flipped a Senate seat in Texas, marking the first time a Democrat has won the state's Senate seat since 1988. Talarico will be joined in Washington D.C. by his longtime girlfriend, Brianna Menard. The couple met when Menard served as Talarico's chief of staff. She later left his office to work for other elected officials before becoming the director of the Texas Medical Association Political Action Committee (TEXPAC). During Talarico's campaign, Menard was reportedly targeted, with an opponent falsely claiming Talarico was vegan, a claim his campaign clarified referred to Menard. Talarico has previously referred to Menard as his "best friend" and "rock."
