Week one of the renovation competition series "The Block" has been marked by early turmoil as Foreman Dan strictly enforces new time restrictions, leading to immediate penalties for contestants. The show's latest season introduced a series of changes, including council-imposed work-hour limitations at the Mount Eliza worksite, which have already begun to impact the participants.
Tuesday night's episode saw contestants Courtney and Sev become the first to experience the consequences of the new rules. After missing the 6 p.m. cutoff by a single minute while packing their car, the gates to the site were locked, leaving their vehicle trapped inside. "I hope they don't need their car tonight," Foreman Dan commented as he secured the site.
Courtney and Sev expressed their frustration, stating, "It was 6:01 p.m. when we were loading into our car, and Dan locked the gates on us! So the car got trapped inside and he said, 'You guys are going to have to find your own way home, you're not taking the car, too bad.'" The pair eventually received a lift home from their plasterer, resolving to be more diligent the following day.
The new regulations, unveiled by host Scott Cam during the season premiere, dictate that tradies and contestants are permitted on site only between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. Weekend hours are also restricted, with Saturdays limited to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays exclusively reserved for judging. "It's going to be tough. You'll be working the same restricted council hours as everyone else in Mount Eliza," Cam had warned the contestants.
Beyond the daily time constraints, the season also features a "House Decider" challenge. The five teams will spend the opening week renovating a guest bedroom, with the winners earning the first choice of the five luxury homes. The team that finishes last will be assigned the remaining property. The intense pressure of these early challenges, coupled with the strict new scheduling, has already led to fraying nerves among the contestants.
