New Poll Shows Tight Race for New York's 17th Congressional District
Democrat Cait Conley holds a slim lead over Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in a district that could be pivotal in determining control of the House.

Democrat Cait Conley holds a narrow 2-point lead over Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York's 17th Congressional District, a crucial swing district, according to a PIX 11/Emerson College Polling survey released Thursday. The poll indicates a close contest heading into the final four weeks before the election, with Conley at 48% and Lawler at 46% among likely voters.
The survey, the first for the suburban Hudson Valley district, showed 7% of voters remain undecided. The margin of error for the poll of 400 likely voters is 4.9 percentage points, suggesting the race is highly competitive.
The poll also revealed an enthusiasm gap, with voters who expressed being "very excited" to vote favoring Conley 52% to 45%. Conversely, voters who are "somewhat excited" break for Lawler 52% to 40%.
In a potential sign of concern for Lawler, crossover support from Democrats appears to have decreased compared to a previous poll in October 2024. In that earlier survey, 20% of Democrats supported Lawler, while only 4% of Republicans backed his then-opponent, Mondaire Jones. The current poll shows Democratic crossover support for Lawler has fallen to 12%, while Republican support for Conley has risen to 10%.
Economic issues, including jobs, inflation, and taxes, were cited as the top concern by 31% of voters. "Threats to democracy" followed at 23%, with immigration at 13% and housing affordability at 12%.
Regarding foreign policy, 52% of voters disapprove of U.S. military action in Iran, while 37% support it, and 11% are unsure.
The poll also assessed the candidates' favorability ratings. Lawler's favorability stands at 45%, with 46% holding an unfavorable view. Conley has a 44% favorability rating, with 35% unfavorable and a significant 22% undecided.
Since October 2024, Lawler's favorability has dropped seven points from 52% to 45%, while his unfavorable rating has increased four points from 42% to 46%.
Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who is seeking reelection, has a mixed reception in the 17th district, with 40% approving of her job performance and 49% disapproving. Despite this, her approval number in the district has increased from 26% in October 2024.
Former President Donald Trump's job performance in the district received 43% approval and 53% disapproval.
Lawler, a former state assemblyman, is seeking his third term in Congress. Conley, a U.S. Army veteran and West Point graduate who served in the Department of Homeland Security, is making her first bid for political office after winning a five-way Democratic primary.
