New Mexico Hospital System Faces Cybersecurity Incident, Diverting Patients
The University of New Mexico Health System is addressing a cybersecurity issue that has led to patient diversions and clinic closures.
The University of New Mexico Health System is grappling with a cybersecurity incident that has disrupted its services, forcing it to divert ambulances and cancel appointments. The health system, which serves a large portion of New Mexico, announced Monday that it was working to resolve the issue.
The disruption has impacted patient care across the state. Officials are asking the public not to arrive at the main Albuquerque hospital. More than 30 clinics operated by UNM Health have also canceled appointments.
The nature and full extent of the cybersecurity issue remain unclear. The UNM Health System website states that it handles approximately 900,000 outpatient visits and 100,000 emergency room visits annually. It also operates the state's only Level 1 trauma center, making the disruption particularly critical for emergency medical services in New Mexico.
