New Jersey Mayor Mocks Resident Over Job Status, Living Situation During Council Meeting

Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick engaged in a heated exchange with a resident during a council meeting, questioning her employment status and living arrangements after she challenged him on political material included with tax bills. The confrontation occurred on October 19 when longtime resident Dana Tormollan approached the council to complain about a letter from Rodrick that she claimed contained misleading information.

"Did you get a job yet, Dana? Are you still living in the basement at home?" Rodrick asked Tormollan, according to reports. Tormollan stated she was employed and financially independent, but the mayor repeatedly told her to "get a job."

Tormollan told NJ.com that Rodrick's letter accompanying the tax bills was "full of things that were not true" and that she intended to voice her complaint about the use of residents' money for "political nonsense."

She accused Rodrick of repeatedly belittling residents, particularly older women who addressed the council. "He was mocking the older women that were getting up there," Tormollan said. "If he was speaking to my mother that way, I would not sit here…It's really gross and extremely unprofessional."

The exchange with Tormollan was part of a pattern of contentious interactions involving Rodrick. On October 28, the township council passed a 4-3 vote of no confidence in the mayor, citing "reprehensible behavior, disruption of official proceedings and decorum violations."

Further controversy arose during the same October 28 meeting when Rodrick and Councilman Craig Coleman were accused of orchestrating a verbal attack on Council Vice President Thomas Nivison. While Rodrick claimed the meeting's livestream was experiencing technical issues, Coleman proceeded to read a resolution alleging Nivison had verbally abused another council member. Nivison later stated the livestream issue was a "ploy by the scammers over here."

These incidents have occurred amid growing frustration with Rodrick's conduct toward residents and fellow officials. The no-confidence vote followed a contentious dispute over affordable housing, which divided the township's elected officials. Council members voted against an ordinance that would have designated 42 units as affordable housing.

Rodrick has faced other confrontations, including a July meeting where he clashed with Council President David Ciccozzi over the sale of municipal land. Tormollan was also involved in an unsuccessful petition campaign to recall Rodrick, which failed to gather enough signatures to proceed.
